Exalting Jesus in John – A Review
From the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series, Exalting Jesus in John is a fabulous edition! I really enjoy this series of books, and was grateful to have had the edition on James when preaching from James. It was an excellent resource and there was much in there that I am thankful to the saints whom have come before me for putting down in writing.
Like My Own Private Bible Study Group
Reading Exalting Jesus in John is as if I am partaking in an in-depth Bible study with other people when it’s really just me reading the book. I could literally almost hear myself having conversations with some of my closest friends regarding passages from all the chapters and sections from John as covered in the book. It’s an incredibly edifying resource.
Contents and Use
Exalting Jesus in John breaks down the twenty-one chapters of John chapter-by-chapter, pericope-by-pericope. Each section has a main idea followed by a basic outline that goes with the main idea. Everything is done in an easy-to-understand way that isn’t overly wordy or complicated. For example, for the section on John 3:31-36, the main idea is, “John provides his disciples three reasons to follow Jesus as the Christ.” The following outline are the three reasons with the respective verses from this passage. Simple, understandable, yet dead on. Where many commentaries are very technical and wordy, this is concise and to the point.
When reading through the commentary, like most commentaries, you don’t have to read cover-to-cover. You can skip and jump around, which is beneficial because those using it, whether it being in pastoral ministry or academic research, often don’t have the time to read through an entire book.
Exalting Jesus in John, as is true of all of the Christ-Centered Exposition commentaries I’ve seen, is made in such a way that one doesn’t need to be a theologian or pastor to understand and utilize it. This strength is what makes this commentary volume such an incredible resource. As I need them, I plan on collecting as many of the volumes of the Christ-Centered Exposition series as I can. And I am very glad that I was able to receive Exalting Jesus in John.
