My Merry Christmas – A Review

My Merry Christmas by Sally Lloyd-Jones
Illustrated by Sara Gianassi

With the Christmas season almost over, there is a plethora of Christmas items all over the blogospheres. However, this children’s book, My Merry Christmas by Sally Lloyd-Jones stands apart. A short board book, My Merry Christmas takes the most tangible symbol of Christmas found within many homes, the Christmas Tree, and makes it into a wonderful object lesson.

The wording is done so beautifully that, while full of meaning, the book is still very easy to read and understand for the child who is reading it or having it read to them. The rhyming of the words is very Dr. Seuss-esque in how there are rhymes amongst rhymes. However, the distinctly Christian focus of this regarding the true meaning of Christmas, the advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, is what really sets this apart. And the illustrations in My Merry Christmas are wonderfully done by Sara Gianassi. The pages switch between scenes of animals decorating a Christmas tree to scenes from Biblical times, retelling the narrative of the birth of Jesus

Overall, this is a great Christmas book for children, probably one of the best children’s books regarding the birth of Christ and the true meaning of Christmas that I’ve ever read! My children enjoyed my wife reading it to them, and this is going to become a tradition of reading this every year at Christmas time, starting in 2017!
