The Weekly Nerd – Monday Edition – July 16th

Welcome to the Monday Edition of The Weekly Nerd! This is where I gather articles and other things that I have enjoyed reading and give you the pleasure of reading them as well, if you click on the links, that is.

My Number One Read:

The Bible’s Meaning Never Changes
“In this lab, John Piper reminds us that our opinions about a verse may change, but a text’s true meaning forever remains the same.” I love this series from John Piper!

Chocolate Milk May Be Better Than Sports Drinks…
What?! Yes! I really do like chocolate milk, a lot. And now I have found justification to drink more of it…

My Baby Nephew Was Dying And His Mother’s Response Was Unforgettable
This is an incredible and hear-wrenching read regarding the power of prayer and of God despite horrible circumstances where it seems everything is working against you.

Forgetting A Child Inside A Hot Car Seems Impossible – Until It Happens To You
“Now that she’s forward-facing, I thank God for a little fan I have plugged into the cigarette lighter that blows air into the backseat. Because it doesn’t connect to the rest of the car except through the lighter, it doesn’t turn off when the car does. And when the rest of the car is quiet, that little whirring sound is a reminder that my child is in the backseat—even if I have always remembered her. But even though I’ve never forgotten her, it could still happen. And I am doing everything in my power to circumvent my autopilot memory.”

How To Leave Behind Porn
Reading this is very timely after a poignant discussion I recently had with my pastor and another man from the church.
“This frightened me. What did she mean? Yes, I knew I had to repent. Yes, Jesus had used this destruction in my life to show me his gospel in a saving way for the very first time. I was ready (or so I thought) to turn from my sin. The solution seemed obvious enough: (1) I had to confess openly my problem with porn, (2) I had to get an accountability partner, and (3) I needed to see a counselor at my school (I ended up doing all three).”

Justin, There Are 12 Things You Need To Do If You Want Your Marriage To Work
This is great marriage advice for anyone, not just the Bieber. “Fairy tale marriages are hard to find. And by “hard to find,” we mean “impossible to find.” Our own marriage certainly hasn’t been a fairy tale. It’s been messy. It’s taken a lot of hard work. But we’ve been determined to fight for our marriage, and the fight has been well worth the effort.”

Virtual Reality Developers Aim To Spark Tech Boom In Deep South
The new frontier in technology has the potential to create industry and jobs. Let’s hope that it works out.

Geneva College Prevails In Legal Battle for Religious Freedom
“The order in Geneva College v. Azar ended Geneva’s six-year legal action against the mandate, which sought to force employers to provide abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization and contraception through their health plans regardless of religious or moral convictions. Geneva was represented by Alliance Defending Freedom, a non-profit legal organization that advocates for the right of people to freely live out their faith.”
