There are several books in the Christian world that exist outside of Scripture as must-reads for Christians. Among these, Knowing God by J.I. Packer is usually at the top. Then, it’s debatable on what follows. I’ve seen titles such as John Piper’s Desiring God, John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, amongst many others. However, with the recent release of Gentle and Lowly last year, I must say that, in my opinion, there is a new number-two book for Christians to read. Yes, Knowing God still reigns, but Gentle and Lowly take a close second place.
In this book, Dane Ortlund brings forth the very heart of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as seen through His own words in the Gospel of Matthew:
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29, ESV)
It is through this verse that Dane Orltund takes on a journey through Scripture to see who Jesus is, and what a refreshing journey it is!
Dane Ortlund calls us, as believers, to not just worship Jesus, but to really know Jesus, to know His heart for us, His sheep, and truly experience His love for us.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough for believers young and old, mature and immature. Just as Knowing God and so many others have endured through the ages as must-reads for Christians, Gentle and Lowly is quickly joining the ranks of those.
